damask fabricDamask is often a reversible fabric that features a woven pattern. High end Damask fabrics are usually made from silk or linen or a combination of the two but you can find damask fabrics commonly made with wool, cotton, or synthetic fibers also.

Damask is known for its combination of satin and sateen weave, created with one warp and one weft. In general, the satin warp and the sateen weft weaves interchange.

The term was originally created when referring to ornamental silk fabrics, known for illustrious colors and patterns.

History of Damask

Damask was originally found in India, China, Persia, and Syria. Later Damask was produced in the Byzantine Empire. The name comes from the city of Damascus, in the 12th century. Damascus was well known for its textiles and was the center of trade between the West and East. Their version of this fabric was so outstanding that the fabric was named after the city.

Damask is regarded as one of the first elegant fabrics during the Renaissance.

Table linens most commonly feature weaves in linen, cotton, synthetic or blended fibers. Table cloths for use at the table or with bedding are very popular. Finer Damask fabrics are made of high quality linen & silk yarns.

Long floats of warp and weft create pronounced highlights in the fabrics, while the subdued effects are created by shorter floats of yarn.

The finest results are produced by using double Damask weaves. In a single Damask weave, one warp thread goes over four and under one weft thread. For the double Damask weave, one warp thread goes over seven or more and under one weft thread. The result is finer and stronger fabric.
